Greater Manchester Integrated Transport 09
Delivering Achievable Transport Plans
In May 2009 a new transport package for Greater Manchester was announced with a significant £1.4 billion investment. The series of projects aim to deliver an accessible and integrated transport network that leaves a legacy not just for Manchester but the North West region. The vote against peak-time road congestion charge resulted in a funding deficit for planned projects and the task now is how to deliver high quality schemes at a reduced cost. What lessons can be learned from other regions given Manchester’s revised plans for funding and the transport network?
The impact of rising transport congestion continues to have severe implications for the Greater Manchester society, economy and environment. In the turbulent economic climate what are the best practices to utilise to make sure that Greater Manchester reaches the targets of an efficient, effective and more environmentally friendly transport network?
The Greater Manchester region is home to key economic assets including the successful city region, established Higher Education institutions, Manchester Airport and the focus of commercial, retail, leisure and cultural tourism. The long term costs to the regional economic growth of failing to act to remove transport constraints remains as vital as ever. We aim to address the key issues and look at innovative solutions to reducing journey times, peak-time congestion, carbon emissions and increasing reliability, efficiency and effectiveness across the transport network. The transport investment scheme will ensure that Greater Manchester delivers an enhanced public service to commuters and passengers with improved environmental outcomes and a sustainable network for future generations.
