21 April 2010 People shaping health and social care
We are delighted to welcome two new employees to the National Voices team, Jules Acton and Matthew Charlton.
Jules Acton has joined National Voices as Director of Engagement and Membership. Jules has a background in journalism and charity communications, recently working for The Wildlife Trusts as Head of Communications. Jules has also spent a year in an interim role working with NHS organisations across the East Midlands on communications around major service changes.
Matthew Charlton joined National Voices in April as a Policy and Research Intern and will be with us for four months. He recently completed an MA in History at University College London and is now looking to gain experience in the public or third sector. His interests in this field lie particularly in the area of policy research, and he will be helping with the creation of our White Paper document before the party conferences later this year.
We are excited at the prospects of what both will bring to the team.
Our Chief Executive was quoted on the BBC website regarding a need to be more open and honest about hospital closures. This was also reported as a cover story in the HSJ magazine.
Analysis of the party manifestos Recently the three main political parties published their election manifestos. We have produced an analysis on each, specifically focusing on their health and social care policies. Each of our analyses can be accessed by clicking the links below:
GMC meets our service user panel The General Medical Council (GMC) is holding two workshops in conjunction with National Voices as part of its UK-wide consultation on the revalidation of doctors. The first of these meetings will be held on Monday 26th April in Leeds. A report on the event will follow shortly.
Do you have good case examples of shared decision making between clinicians and patients, and of patient and public involvement in the design and delivery of services? Do these include evidence of improvements in clinical outcomes, patient experience or value for money? Jeremy Taylor recently joined members of the NHS Alliance at a meeting with Sir John Oldham at the Department of Health. Sir John is leading part of the Department’s QIPP programme (quality, innovation, productivity and prevention). This is the programme which is seeking to do more for less as the NHS gears up to find up to £20 billion of savings in the short term and cope with rising demand in the longer term. Sir John understands the value and relevance to QIPP of shared decision making and of patient and public involvement. He is keen to see good practice examples of both. Please forward anything you think might be useful to the National Voices team. It will be useful for us too, as we amass the evidence for our planned “white paper” later this year.
Following the merger of the Postgraduate Medical Education and Training Board (PMETB) with the General Medical Council (GMC) on 1 April 2010, the GMC is now responsible for regulating all stages of medical education in the UK.
NICE launches new website page for patient and the public National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) has launched a new page on its website. This page allows the user to access all of NICE guidance written for patients, carers and the public from one dedicated site.
The Valuing People Now and PSA 16 Housing Delivery Plan was launched on 31 March 2010. This is a cross government plan led by the Department of Health and Department for Communities and Local Government, to help people with learning disabilities get more choice and control in where they live.
The Health Foundation will be holding its annual awards scheme, ‘Closing the Gap’. Each year the scheme focuses on specific area of health care and provides funding to successful applicants to tackle known gaps between the routine delivery of care and best practice. The deadline for applications is in July, with interviews and assessment to be held in September.
