The Princess Royal Trust for Carers

General Election Newsletter

The General Election is only weeks away. And last week the first televised election debate in our history brought the leaders of the three main parties together to talk about immigration, the economy, defence spending, and (believe it or not) carers.
It's great that carers are getting such high-profile coverage, but hailing carers as "unsung heroes" isn't enough. The politicians need to go further...

Our five election asks for carers
The Princess Royal Trust for Carers has produced five key election asks for carers, following confirmation from the Prime Minister Gordon Brown that the UK general election will be held on 6th May.
Carers can challenge election campaigners and candidates in their area with the five pledges in the run-up to the election in May.

Party leaders call carers “unsung heroes”, but that’s just the start…
Our resident blogger and policy officer, Gordon Conochie, gives his view on last Thursday's leaders debate. It was the UK's first televised debate for party leaders and social care was one of the key topics discussed.
All three men praised carers, with the familiar refrains of "unsung heroes", but we've all heard that before. Read Gordon's blog to find out more about what the politicians should be offering carers.

What does the General Election mean for carers in Scotland?
Guest blogger and Scottish policy officer, Lynn Williams, gave us some insight into what the General Election will mean for the UK's Scottish carers, last week.
There are 657,000 carers and 100,000 young carers in Scotland. Lynn, who is one of those carers, explains why it's so important that carers in Scotland use their democratic right and cast their vote on 6th May.

On the discussion boards: the three leaders debate
Carers on our boards aren't shy of a good debate and last week's leaders debate was a chance for our members to learn about what each of the parties are going to be offering carers.
Reports in the media have focused on Lib Dem leader Nick Clegg's performance. And carers on our boards have been giving their assesment of how each leader performed on the night.
Changes on Carers.org
There are some exciting changes coming up on Carers.org. At the end of the summer we'll be unveiling a new website with features that will allow you to private messages each other easily and post your own blogs.
We're really looking forward to the improvements which will make Carers.org an even better place for carers to get help and support and have fun.
